About Canfield Drilling Company

Canfield--2For over 90-years and four generations, the Canfield family and staff have served Northeast Colorado with the finest in water well construction, pumping system installation, and pump repair services. Our well-maintained fleet of specialized equipment operated by industry professionals is your assurance of quality results and lasting value. Field operations are further supported by our 2-acre complex which includes machine-shop, metal-fabrication, large inventory, and offices dedicated to your important project.

Founding of Canfield Drilling

In 1925 L. L. Canfield started Canfield Drilling – some hand dug wells, moving houses, thrashing grain.

1936

Reverse Rotary Drilling

L.L. Canfield and Harry Clatworthy designed a rig using 4-inch drill pipe and 4-inch centrifugal pump.

August 1936 the first well was drilled with this rig.

1939

New Pump Design

When L.L. Canfield changed to a 6-in pipe with his 4-in pump he had problems with larger solids not passing properly. A local machinist, Jack Dove built a new pump that L.L. Canfield had designed.

1940's

Slowly Building the Business

Prior to World War II slowly building the business.

REA Electricity Available

By 1940 REA electricity had become available to power wells for irrigation.

Post World War II business accelerated.

Dry Spell • Then Demand Exploded Overnight

The demand for new irrigation wells increased, due to the dry spell and lasted into the mid/late 60’s.

1965

Majority of Drilling Work • Replacing • Rehab • Refurbishing

Since the dry spell • majority of drilling work replacing, rehab, refurbishing old equipment.

Spurt of Well Construction and Pumps

Jeff Canfield joined in late 70’s -focusing on acquisition and construction of production equipment with increased attention to system operation and efficiencies.
Jeff focused on higher efficiency than the competition—key to company delivering a superior product.

Passing of a Father and Co-Owner

December – H.E. Canfield, Jeff’s dad, passed away.

This left 4 owners: D.R. Henness Jr., D.R. Henness III, L. George Canfield, and Jeff Canfield.

The retirement of a co-owner, D.R. Henness Jr. came in the mid 80’s.

Big Improvements

Big improvement of infrastructure of all types began in the 1980’s.

1990's

Continued Improvement of Infrastructure of all Types

Investment in infrastructure continued throughout the 90’s.  Huge equipment improvements with diversification into pumping equipment manufacturing and O.E.M. product distribution.

2002

Another Retiree

D.R. Henness III retired in 2002.

2005

Improvement of Equipment Resources and Skill Level of Personnel

2005 – present – Continued improvement of equipment resources and skill level of personnel.

2014

L. George Left Company

In 2014 L. George Canfield left the company.

2015

Current Generation

Jeff’s sons both started sweeping floors in their teens and in 2015 both Joel K. and Joren K. became owners.
